What Is The Best Priced Vinyl Flooring In South Africa?
Several aspects influence the average vinyl floor price in South Africa; we explore these factors and how to choose the best flooring for your home or business.
As with picking any kind of flooring, you might find the process of seeking out a new design exciting – but it is easy to forget about just how many considerations are involved in deciding which floors are best for you.
Vinyl floors are promoted as a durable, affordable option for property owners who want to add cost-friendly style to any space, but the price tag attached to vinyl flooring in South Africa will depend upon a few features of the product.
We help you understand and navigate these features so that you can make an informed purchase.
Vinyl Floor Price is Determined by the Type of Vinyl You Choose
Vinyl has been around for decades, but we are not stuck dealing with cheap, plastic-looking floors anymore.
It’s no secret that there is a wide variety of designs and styles available. Countless options currently on the market mean you can get that beautiful stone tile look in your kitchen or opt for something that emulates hardwood in your home office.
Vinyl is versatile, user-friendly and a superior option if you know you will want to change up your floors as trends shift in a few years.
Vinyl flooring is a composite product made from PVC that has been bonded to a fibrous core. This is then topped with a printed layer that emulates hardwood or stone and is covered by a transparent wear layer for protection.
When looking at pricing, however, you must consider the products on the market. Each of these products has its own features, pros, and cons, and will vary in how much they cost too.
Luxury vinyl tiles and planks:
- Also known as LVTs and LVPs, luxury vinyl is one of the fastest-growing types of floors on the market. It features superior resistance to water and the right product will perform well under high foot traffic. These planks and tiles are usually on the high-end spectrum and cost more than other kinds of vinyl floors. With no felt or fibre layer, LVTs are more rigid, and they boast both durability and easy maintenance. Stick-down tiles and planks are glued directly onto the floor, while the click-lock designs use a tongue-and-groove system. Wood plastic composites (WPCs) are a type of luxury vinyl made from a thicker board and they are extremely water resistant. Then there are stone plastic composites (SPCs), the latest in luxury vinyl advancements. Stone plastic composites are also thicker and feature a core that makes them exceptionally resistant to expansion and shrinkage.
Sheet vinyl flooring:
- This option comes in a continuous, flexible sheet that can be rolled out onto a floor and then glued down or left as a freely floating floor over the underlayment. If the room is not too big, the sheets may be large enough to cover an entire floor, but they can also be cut to fit as needed. Due to no or very few seams, this type of vinyl is water resistant. It’s an option that is usually more budget friendly.
Vinyl composite tile:
- Vinyl composite tiles (VCTs) are made with materials such as pulverised limestone, thermoplastic binders, and fillers. The materials are fused into sheets and then cut into tiles, and were once quite popular, but have taken a backseat to options like luxury vinyl and SPCs. Homeowners often find this the least preferable option as the tiles are not as water resistant and have a shorter lifespan, though they are relatively inexpensive.
Cushion vinyl:
- Cushion vinyl comes in sheets of two, three, or four-metre widths, which means fewer seams and an easy installation. It has a durable and tough wear layer, making it a fantastic option for domestic installations while remaining ultra-affordable.
Quality Comes Down to Thickness and Wear Layer
If you’re looking at options, you will find something in every price range. The average vinyl floor price can range from R300 per m2and under for entry-level products, to R700 per m2 and more for commercial-grade, high-traffic floors of superior quality. Price is not always indicative of quality, however. If you want to know how well your vinyl flooring will perform, you will need to explore how thick the product is, how durable the wear layer is, and what kind of backing the product features.
Preparation of the Subfloor and Installation
Every property’s subfloor is different, and your property will need to be assessed to ensure that the subfloor is properly prepared before the installation. Vinyl installations are DIY-friendly because installing them is not too difficult, but without preparing the subfloor correctly, the product will not perform the way in which it was designed. Hiring professional installers, such as our team at Top Carpets and Floors, also means you get to take advantage of installation guarantees.
