The 3 Main Factors of Carpet Construction

July 26, 2019

Carpets have been a favourite in homes and businesses across the globe for decades now. Wall-to-wall carpeting adds an element of luxury to any space it is introduced to, which is why you will find that 5-star hotels and fine dining establishments all employ this kind of flooring. Various carpet types exist and finding the right product to introduce to your home is not as simple as choosing the one that looks best.

There are a few apparent aspects to consider before buying a carpet, such as the price, design and feel. But did you know that there are three main factors of carpet construction that are really what influences how well your carpet functions within your home?  Keep reading if you would like to understand carpet specifications better.

1. Face Weight

When looking at how durable carpet types are, you need to consider the face weight. Face weight is how much the fibre in a carpet actually weighs and is primarily determined by the pile height (measured from the backing of the rug to the surface of the thread). When the pile height is longer (thus with a higher face weight), the fibres are more prone to bend and wear, whereas a shorter pile height makes for a tougher mat.

2. Yarn Density

Density not only refers to how many fibres there are on a rug, but also how closely they are packed together. The fibres of a denser mat are more tightly packed and won’t be able to rub against each other as much during foot traffic. This is a key factor when it comes to how long a carpet will last. To see how dense your chosen mat is, simply try to dig your fingers into the fibres to feel the backing – the harder it is to reach the backing, the denser your carpet is.

3. Twist Level

In cut pile and cut and loop pile carpet types, the “twist” technique is used. This technique entails twisting cut fibres into each other so that the fibres inevitably become stronger. The tighter the level of twist, the more resilient the rug will be. Twist pile carpets are extremely popular due to how textured they feel and the fact that they aren’t easily flattened by furniture or foot traffic.

Taking Care of Your Carpet

While the construction of your product is the most critical aspect to bear in mind, how you treat your carpeting will have a significant effect on how hardwearing it is in the long run. Carpets that are not maintained regularly (by not being vacuumed enough or by leaving debris to accumulate) often show damage far sooner than their design dictates. By installing your carpeting away from moisture, food, and messy activities, you can preserve its beauty for many years to come.
