7 Common Questions About Flooring

Flooring is a big investment. If you are shopping for flooring in Cape Town, you may be struggling to decide which flooring solutions you should look into. There are many flooring solutions on the market, so it is understandable that shopping around can become overwhelming.

Below are 7 common questions about flooring solutions, to help you make the right choice.

Question 1: Is carpeting a good choice for homes with pets?

You can install carpets if you have pets but just ask for advice about the pile. A cut pile is a better choice as a looped pile can hook on pets’ nails.

Question 2: How do I choose a carpet for my living room?

Always consider foot traffic. A living room is a busy area, so it would be wise to go for a patterned, durable carpet which hides dirt well.

Question 3: I live in Cape Town. Don’t carpets need regular cleaning with water?

There is a wide variety of beautiful flooring options which need very little to no water to keep clean. Carpet is one of these. Professional cleaning can extend the life of the carpet and also reduces the presence of allergens by improving the air quality. The right type of carpet installed in the right area of the home should only need to be professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months.

Question 4: Can I install laminate flooring myself?

We do not advise you undertake any flooring installation on your own. A professional installer has the knowledge and the tools of the trade to give you the finished product you expect. Your installation will also not be backed by a warranty if you don’t have it done professionally.

Question 5: Do I have to wash laminate flooring, or do I just sweep it?

Laminate flooring is water resistant. This makes it very low maintenance and suitable for areas like bathrooms and kitchens. While the flooring can withstand spills and splashes, we advise keeping water to the minimum and only to use laminate-friendly products when mopping (again, with minimum water).

Question 6: I want a hardwood floor in my kitchen. Will it be expensive?

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and laminate flooring are great mimickers of hardwood, at a fraction of the cost. Floors made from natural materials may be beautiful, but they have their challenges. Real hardwood, for example, can be prone to chipping or warping and certainly does not like water, whereas LVT and laminate are naturally water resistant.

Question 7: Can I only put LVT flooring in my kitchen or bathroom?

Flooring solutions like LVT are an obvious choice for moisture-prone kitchens and bathrooms, but also suitable for any other room in the home. This type of flooring is wonderfully soft, quiet underfoot and also low maintenance, so why not experience this comfort throughout your home?
